Abstract:

Receptor-like proteins (RLPs) are present in many plant species with a total of 57 members in Arabidopsis thaliana. It was shown that RLP proteins are implicated in plant growth and development as well as in disease resistance. CLAVATA2 (CLV2), FASCINATED EAR2 (FEA2) and TOO MANY MOUTHS (TMM) play a role in plant development; CLV2 and its functional maize ortholog FEA2 regulates meristem maintenance and organogensis, while TMM regulates stomatal distribution. In addition, RLPs have been found to play a role in disease resistance, such as the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Cf, Ve and LeEix proteins that mediate resistance against the fungal pathogens Cladosporium fulvum, Verticillium spp., and Trichoderma viride, respectively. Evidence is also accumulating for RLP to be a critical component in cell-to-cell communication. The progress of RLP functioning and signaling are summarized in this review.

Key words: receptor-like protein; Arabidopsis; growth and development; signal transduction
